A joint team of police officers from the FCT Command and other security agencies foiled a bank robbery in Abaji, Abuja, on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of two armed robbers and one police officer.

The incident began around 5 p.m. when the robbers attacked a police station on Toto Road. During the surprise attack, Inspector Habila was shot in the chest and killed. The robbers then proceeded to a nearby bank, firing their weapons as they went.

At the bank, the robbers tried to access the strong room but could only steal some cash from the counter. During this chaos, a bank security guard was shot while attempting to hide.

A combined team of police officers, soldiers, vigilantes, and hunters quickly responded to the scene. They engaged the robbers in a fierce gun battle, killing two of them. One robber, who was injured and unable to escape, was caught by angry residents and set on fire.

FCT Police Commissioner Benneth Igweh confirmed the deaths of the two robbers during the shootout. “Police anti-robbery squad and hunters have been deployed in the bush along the Abaji area to trace the fleeing robbers,” he said.

CP Igweh praised the combined security team for their quick response and successful intervention. He also expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased Inspector Habila.
