The Imo State Police Command has taken action against four police officers caught on video allegedly extorting money from passersby in Owerri.

The officers, identified as Inspectors Ibrahim Nainna, Unaka Maxvirgin, Miller Ibinitta, and Sergeant Antony Alozie, have been arrested and are currently facing an internal disciplinary process known as an “orderly room trial.”

The incident came to light after a viral video showed the officers collecting bribes, which sparked outrage among the public. Speaking about the issue, the police spokesman for Imo State, Henry Okoye, confirmed the arrest and ongoing trial of the officers. He said, “The officers have been detained and are undergoing an orderly room trial. The results of the proceedings will be communicated in due course.”

Okoye also emphasized the police command’s commitment to fighting corruption within its ranks, adding that such misconduct would not be tolerated.

The viral video has highlighted the broader issue of corruption within the police force, which has been a concern in other parts of Nigeria as well. For instance, in Lagos, four police inspectors were recently arrested for extorting ₦70,000 from a 16-year-old boy.

The public expects the outcome of the trial to set an example for accountability in the police force, as calls for reform and discipline within law enforcement grow across the country.
