Four officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were killed in an ambush by Boko Haram insurgents in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State on November 18, 2024.

The attack occurred near the boundary between Niger and Kaduna states while the officers were inspecting national grid installations. One officer remains missing, while two others returned to base unharmed.

NSCDC spokesperson Babawale Afolabi confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday.

“Seven personnel of the Corps’ Special Squad, drawn from the National Headquarters, FCT, and Kaduna State Command, were declared missing when ambushed by Boko Haram insurgents during an inspection tour of the National Grid Installation.

“As of today, out of the seven missing officers, four dead bodies had been recovered; two men returned back to base unhurt, while one personnel is still missing in action,” Afolabi said.

The NSCDC Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Audi, extended condolences to the families of the deceased and visited the injured officers in the hospital. He praised their bravery and assured them of the Corps’ full support, including medical expenses and welfare assistance.

“This tragic incident highlights the dangers our officers face daily. Their courage in defending national assets is commendable. We will ensure the affected families and personnel receive all necessary support,” Audi stated.

He also condemned the attack, describing it as a significant loss. Audi directed the immediate release of financial and logistical aid to the injured and pledged to expedite insurance benefits for the bereaved families.

The ambush happened in the Farin-Kasa area of Chikun Local Government, Kaduna State. The team, consisting of nine officers and 71 other ranks, had completed surveillance in Shiroro and was returning to base when over 200 heavily armed insurgents attacked their convoy from a hilltop.

Despite being outnumbered, the NSCDC operatives repelled the attack, reportedly neutralising more than 50 insurgents. The team was also escorting stranded expatriates found in Dagwachi Village, who were returning from a mining site.

Audi urged NSCDC personnel to remain vigilant and assured them of continued support from the leadership. He also called on the public to back security agencies in their fight against insecurity.

“The personnel demonstrated an unwavering commitment to their duty. They deserve all the support from the organisation and the government they serve,” Audi added.
