Four people were killed on Sunday evening in what authorities describe as a cult-related attack at Afor Nawfia Market along the Onitsha–Awka Old Road, the Anambra State Police Command has confirmed.
According to police, the attackers, who were said to be traveling in a black Lexus Jeep, opened fire randomly at the market before speeding away.
Investigators have not yet identified the assailants or confirmed the vehicle’s registration details.
Police noted that the incident occurred despite earlier preventive operations.
Days before the shooting, operatives of the Special Anti-Cult Squad in Enugwu-Ukwu had arrested two suspects following credible intelligence about an impending gang clash. Officers also recovered a firearm during the operation.
The Command said the arrested suspects have been assisting investigators in efforts to head off further cult-related violence in Awka and nearby communities. “Although the hoodlums escaped before police arrival, preliminary information obtained at the scene has provided useful leads,” said the Anambra State Police Command. Authorities say they are actively pursuing those responsible.
Reaffirming its resolve to combat cultism and violent crime, the Command pledged to keep the public informed as the investigation progresses. SP Ikenga Tochukwu, Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, assured residents that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
