An express train crashed in the northeastern state of Bihar, India leaving at least four people dead and around 80 passengers injured according to local authorities on Thursday.

The train’s departure from Delhi was destined for the Kamakhya Junction in Assam, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The tragic incident occurred at around 9:35 pm local time as the train, departing from the Anand Vihar Terminal railway station in Delhi, was en route to Kamakhya Junction in Assam.

The crash resulted in a severe impact, with a total of 21 coaches leaving the tracks.

“Four casualties have been confirmed, and a rescue operation is underway,” stated Tarun Prakash, the general manager of the East Central Railway.

Several of the injured passengers have been transported to hospitals in Bihar’s capital city, Patna, for medical treatment.

In response to the incident, India’s Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, conveyed his condolences on social media and vowed to investigate the root cause of the derailment

He stated, “Deepest condolences for the irreparable loss,” and emphasized the need to determine the circumstances behind the tragedy.

Vaishnaw also confirmed the completion of the evacuation and rescue operation, assuring that passengers have been transferred to another train to continue their journey.

This unfortunate incident adds to a series of train accidents that have occurred in India over the years.

In June of this year, India witnessed one of the worst train crashes in two decades when a triple-train collision in Odisha resulted in the tragic loss of at least 288 lives.
