Its a new calendar year and that means a fresh start for those willing to take the advantage.

While the government has assured Nigerians that it is doing its best to pull the country out of recession, the citizens can also look for opportunities to support the government effort. While the recession is a bad news for many, it is an opportunity for a few who can see through the cacophony of complaints, grunts and murmuring about the effects of recession.

Here are four suggestions:

1. Sales of fruits

No matter how hard the recession is, and no matter how austere the measures taken by governments, corporation and individuals, no one will cut the amount of food, or fruits. Fruits are essential and so it will always be in demand. Well packaged fruits or fruit juices will also appeal to the vanities of many. The reasoning will be that, even though luxury goods may be overly expensive, well packaged fruits are not ‘low level’ and they are also not expensive.

2. Repair services (automobile, electronics, etc)

Repair services grow by leaps and bounds during a recession. The last thing people want to do during a recession is make a large purchase like a car, big pieces of electronics and so on. They try to keep their current cars and devices running instead.

If you are an unemployed auto mechanic, electronics technician or if you are a business manager who wants to start repair business, the recession period is your best opportunity. It’s probably one of the best businesses you can start. Even when the recession is over, there is always a demand for auto mechanics and electronics technicians.

3. Animal husbandry

If you live in a peri-urban location or you can get a space there, then consider animal husbandry. Like fruits and food items, the need for animal protein does not get out of fashion. You can leave the cattle for the Fulani big dealers, however, livestock like pigs, goat, rams and domesticated wildlife products like the grasscutter and the snail are in big demand in towns. If you can package them well, there s no looking back at all even when the recession is over.

4. Waste collection

waste

Keeping your house free of garbage and waste remains a priority every day of the year, says business website Word Garage. This is therefore a business idea you can implement – if you don’t mind the dirt, variety of unpleasant aromas, and the typical low regard many people have for this job. No worry, no one will look down on a garbage collection firm millionaire CEO.
