Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82 while receiving treatment in a London hospital.
His spokesperson, Garba Shehu, confirmed the news on Sunday in a statement shared on X.
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” Shehu wrote.
Buhari had reportedly been sick for weeks before his death.
He served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023 after earlier ruling the country as a military leader between 1983 and 1985.
He was widely known for his fight against corruption and his push to improve the economy during his time in office.
