Manchester United have appointed football and technical directors for the first time in the club’s illustrious 143 years of existence.
The Red Devils made the announcement on Wednesday via the club’s official website, ending years of speculation over the absence of a director of football at Old Trafford.
John Murtough in the new role of football director, while former midfielder Darren Fletcher has been promoted to technical director.
Murtough has been with the club for seven years and has been influential for the club with the “successful overhauls of the club’s Academy and recruitment department” United said.

According to Manchester Evening News, Murtough oversaw the recruitment of the women’s team in 2018.
He “will work day-to-day with the manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, “to align recruitment and other strategies” as well as “create the structures, processes and culture to deliver sustained success on the pitch,” the club said.
Meanwhile, former midfielder, Fletcher, who joined Solksjaer’s coaching staff in January, will fill the new technical director role.
He will work closely with which will focus on “a co-ordinated and long-term approach to player and squad development”.
