A former Manchester United and Liverpool striker, Phil Chisnall, has passed away at the age of 78.

The late forward was the last player to make a direct move from Old Trafford to rival, Liverpool, for a transfer fee of £25,000 in 1964.

Chisnall rose through United’s youth system and represented the first team between 1961 and 1964.

He was influential under the legendary gaffer, Matts Busby.

Prior to signing for Liverpool in 1964, Chisnall, who was born in Manchester in 1942, scored 10 goals in 47 appearances for United.

At Liverpool, he only managed two goals in eight appearances before moving on to Southend United in 1967. He finished his career at Stockport County in 1971–72 season, making 30 league appearances.

United paid tribute to the former striker on its official website on Thursday: “We are saddened by the passing of our former forward, Phil Chisnall. Phil was a product of our famed youth system and represented the club during Sir Matt Busby’s tenure. Our deepest sympathies are with his loved ones.

“Manchester United extends its condolences to Phil’s family and friends at this sad time,” the statement read.

Liverpool also extended their condolences to the family of the former Anfield striker.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Phil Chisnall. The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with Phil’s family and friends at this sad and difficult time,” the club website stated.
