Reports claimed that Coomassie, who was the Sardauna of Katsina, died at the General Amadi Rimi Specialist Hospital.
The circumstances surrounding the death of the ex-police chief is yet to be disclosed.
In 2017 the former IGP, who is also the Chairman of Arewa Consultative Forum, escaped an assassination attempt at his residence in Katsina.
His guard was, however, killed and another seriously injured by the gunmen that equally carted away the rifle of the fallen cop.
Coomassie would be remembered for his role in the arrest and detention of president-elect M.K.O. Abiola in June 1994. Abiola was held for four years before dying in June 1998. Coomassie, however, evaded responsibility for the detention.
