Former Ebonyi PDP chairman Augustine Nwazunku is dead

The former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ebonyi State, Dr Augustine Alugbala Nwazunku, has passed away.

His death was officially announced on Thursday.

Dr. Nwazunku, who once contested for the governorship ticket of the PDP during the 2023 general elections, was until his death a Consultant and Associate Professor of Environmental Health at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.

Confirmation of his demise came through a statement issued by Senator Paulinus Igwenwagu, the PDP Deputy Governorship candidate in the 2023 elections.

In the statement, the party declared the suspension of all planned activities in honour of the late academic and political figure.

“Good morning PDP family, particularly the state chapter,” the statement reads. “On behalf of our leader, H.E. Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, and the entire Ebonyi PDP, we hereby inform you that we have again lost one of us—a leader and dependable member and former Caretaker Chairman of our party in Ebonyi State—Professor Augustine Nwazunku.”

Following the announcement, the party stated that all meetings and engagements scheduled for Saturday, June 28, 2025, have been put on hold. Members have been directed to assemble at the Aristocrat Hotel along Ezza Road to proceed as a group for a condolence visit to the late professor’s family.

As of the time of this report, details surrounding the cause of his death remain unknown.

Dr. Nwazunku was held in high esteem both within the PDP and the academic and public health communities. His passing represents a significant loss for the party in Ebonyi State.
