The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a 19-year-old bride, Rumasau Muhammed, for allegedly stabbing her husband to death over his refusal to grant approval for the dissolution of their forced marriage three weeks after it was consummated.
State Police spokesman, DSP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed her arrest on Wednesday.
Nguroje disclosed that the late Muhammad Adamu was hacked by the suspect over his refusal to heed her plea for divorce.
The police image maker said the commissioner, CP Aliyu Alhaji, has ordered a clinical investigations into the case.
Nguroje stated that the suspect was arrested in Shelleng Local Government Area of the state where the incident occurred after the case was reported.
“The suspect, Rumasau Muhammed a resident of Wuro Yanka Village, Shelleng local government area, stabbed her late husband Muhammed Adamu with a knife after seeking for divorce and the deceased refused to pronounce such divorce.
“Angered by his refusal to divorce her after several request by her ,the Suspect used knife and stabbed him on his stomach,as a result of which he fell down unconscious and was rushed to the Hospital where he was confirmed dead.
“The Suspect was apprehended by the Police in Shelleng Divisional headquarters, following report received from one Jophas Johnsley a friend of the deceased,” he said.
While frowning against the growing cases of forced marriage, the police commissioner had directed the immediate prosecution of the suspect to serve as deterrence.
He also urged members of the public to avoid compelling their subjects into early and forceful marriages.
