Food prices increased in November – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics on Friday released a report indicating a surge in the average prices of various food items in November. 

The report disclosed a 6.18% increase in the average price of 1kg of brown beans, rising from N790.01 in October 2023. On a year-on-year basis, the item exhibited a notable 44.99% surge from N578.55 in November 2022 to N838.85 in November 2023.

Similarly, the average price of 1kg onion bulb witnessed a substantial year-on-year increase of 60.62%, escalating from N425.71 in November 2022 to N683.78 in November 2023. Additionally, the average price of 1kg of tomatoes surged by 66.69% year-on-year, with a 12.24% increase from N675.91 in October 2023 to N758.65 in November 2023.

“The state profile analysis in November 2023 reveals that the highest average price of 1kg of local rice sold was recorded in Lagos state with N1,122.42 while the lowest was recorded in Kebbi state with N688.00,” NBS stated in its Selected Food Prices Watch report for November released in Abuja on Friday.

Notably, Anambra State reported the highest average price of 1kg of boneless beef at N3,850.47, with Yobe State registering the lowest at N2,533.33.

Further regional analyses revealed Imo State with the highest average price of 1kg of brown beans at N1,109.75, contrasting with Jigawa State, which reported the lowest at N575.00. Anambra State also led in the average price of 1kg onion bulb sold loose at N872.23, while Gombe reported the lowest at N506.41.

Delta State recorded the highest average price of 1kg of tomatoes at N1,505.16, with Kano reporting the lowest at N396.04. Zone-wise, the South-West had the highest average price of 1kg of local rice at N956.28, followed by the South-South at N932.47, while the North-East reported the lowest at N776.12.

In terms of 1kg of boneless beef, the South-East and South-West led with N3,643.65 and N3,290.11, respectively, while the North-East reported the lowest at N2,632.22. The South-East exhibited the highest average price of 1kg of brown beans (sold loose) at N1,034.08, followed by the South-West at N977.98, with the North-West recording the lowest at N663.96.

The South-East and South-South reported the highest average prices of 1kg onion bulb at N817.11 and N775.34, respectively, while the North-East reported the lowest at N529.95. Finally, the South-South led in the average price of 1kg of tomatoes at N1,307.66, followed by the South-West at N1,047.18, and the North-West with the lowest at N434.80.
