The Ebonyi State Police Command has provided details surrounding the unfortunate death of Ayogu Evans, a 300-level student of Ebonyi State University, who reportedly died in a road crash while being chased by police officers on Saturday, December 2.
According to the state police command spokesperson, SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, Evans was stopped for a routine “stop and search” at a checkpoint along Nkaliki Road in Abakaliki, the state capital. Instead of complying, the student allegedly sped off, prompting the police to pursue him.
Contrary to reports that the police officers abandoned the scene after the accident, SP Onovwakpoyeya clarified that the officers did not flee.
She stated, “The driver (Evans) did not stop till he was involved in an accident along Oriuzor Road. Traffic officers were alerted, and with the effort of good citizens, the victim, Ayogu Evans, a student of Ebonyi State University, was conveyed to the hospital where he unfortunately gave up the ghost.”
The police officers reportedly towed Evans’s wrecked vehicle to the division’s station after the incident.
In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command, CP Augustina Ogbodo, addressed student leaders and assured them that concerns regarding the incident would be thoroughly investigated.
She emphasized that anyone found culpable would face appropriate sanctions.
The police spokesperson encouraged citizens to support the police in carrying out their duties and urged them to report any unprofessional conduct by police officers on duty.
Onovwakpoyeya assured the public that disciplinary actions would be taken against any erring police officer.
