David Adeleke popularly called Davido is currently topping the charts as he has hit 20 million followers on Instagram, making him the first African artiste to hit the milestone.
Recall that the music star’s second studio album, ‘A Good Time’ exceeded 200 million streams on Spotify, which made it his highest-streamed project of all time.
Also, According to Rolling Stone magazine, “Fall”- which was released as his second single from his second studio album ‘A Good Time’ (2019) was one of the top-100-most-Shazam-searched singles in America in January 2019 and was a top-10 record on Shazam in New York.
He is fondly called ‘OBO’ by his fan base. His latest slang ‘E Choke’ is a very popular and currently trending street slang. He also has others like Who dey Breeett?, Tule and many more to come. Lol!
2. WIZKID
One of Africa’s biggest artists, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun aka Wizkid is number two on this list with 12.1m followers on Instagram.
The Star Boy entertainment CEO is known for his great style in fashion and his amazing sound.
Wizkid’s fourth album, ‘Made in Lagos’, was released in October 2020, and it met with huge success.
The recently decorated Grammy award winner is presently the most-streamed Nigerian artist of all time on Spotify, with over 3.4 billion streams across all credits.
He won his second NAACP Image Award for his feature on Brown Skin Girl alongside Beyonce, Saint John and Blue-Ivy Carter.
They were announced as the winners of the “Outstanding Music Video/Visual Album” of the year category for, Brown Skin Girl.
He is fondly called ‘Star Boy’ by his fan base. His latest ‘E Restrict my Airflow’ slang is also making rounds online.
3. Mr P
Peter Okoye of the defunct P-square group who goes by the name Mr P is third on the list with 10.9m followers on Instagram.
He is a Nigerian singer-songwriter, dancer, record producer and Multi-instrumentalist.
He released his album ”The Prodigal” on April 1, 2021, Featuring Simi, Teni, Singah, Tamar Braxton, DJ Switch, Ovikelz, Wande Coal.
Mr P is the face of brands like Adidas, Kia, Nutricima, Merrybet, MTN, Olympic milk, Glo and skols.
He owns a football academy, MRP FC, a sports betting company, ZoomLottery and ZoomBets, and record label, P Classic.
He also has a television show, ‘Dance with Peter’ and signed a distribution deal with Empire records in 2017.
4. Tekno
Nigerian singer and songwriter, Augustine Miles Kelechi aka Tekno is number 4 on the list with 8.6m followers on Instagram.
Tekno is famously known for his iconic dance moves.
In June 2018, Tekno signed a distribution deal with Universal Music Group Nigeria (UMGN), a division of Universal Music Group in charge of West Africa, as well as the UK-based Island Records.
In July 2019, Tekno was featured on Beyoncé’s The Lion King: The Gift soundtrack on the song “Don’t Jealous Me”.
In December 6, 2020, Tekno released the tracklist for his long-awaited debut album, Old Romance.
5. FALZ
Nigerian rapper, songwriter and actor, Folarin Falana is number 5 on the list with 8m followers on Instagram.
He currently owns an independent record label called Bahd Guys Records.
Falz is one artist whose voice is always heard when it comes to issues bordering on social justice across the country.
Paying tribute to the victims of police brutality, he released a music video for “Johnny,” the first single off his last album, Moral Instruction.
He wrote in a post introducing the song, “We will never forget the heroes that have been unlawfully slain. This is for them. For every single Nigerian life snatched away unlawfully, we must make sure we get justice.”
