Amena Khan

The first hijab-wearing model, Amena Khan, has announced her withdrawal from a L’Oreal campaign.

The 30-year-old beauty blogger said she was pulling out after an old ‘anti-Israel’ tweets she posted in 2014 were unearthed.

Khan, a Pakistani-Canadian film and TV actress and also an international commercial model expressed regret over the said tweets, which appear to have called Israel an ‘illegal’ and ‘sinister state.

Khan on her Instagram page said that she was stepping down after less than a week ‘because of the current conversations surrounding’ the tweets.

She wrote: “I deeply regret the content of the tweets I made in 2014, and sincerely apologise for the upset and hurt that they have caused.

“Woman with multiple sclerosis charged £4,000 for disabled parking space ‘Championing diversity is one of my passions, I don’t discriminate against anyone.

“I have chosen to delete them as they do not represent the message of harmony that I stand for. ‘I recently took part in a campaign, which excited me because it celebrated inclusivity.

“With deep regret, I’ve decided to step down from this campaign because the current conversations surrounding it detract from the positive and inclusive sentiment that it set out to deliver.”

Khan had said she was excited to be the face of L’Oreal last week before her old tweets stirred up controversies.

A spokesperson for L’Oreal Paris told BBC Newsbeat: ‘We have recently been made aware of a series of tweets posted in 2014 by Amena Khan, who was featured in a UK advertising campaign. ‘We appreciate that Amena has since apologised for the content of these tweets and the offence they have caused.

“L’Oreal Paris is committed to tolerance and respect towards all people. We agree with her decision to step down from the campaign.”

L’Oréal S.A. is a French cosmetics company with a registered office in Paris.

However, her fans on Instagram have expressed mixed reactions over the recent development.

myheavenlydays: What is bothering me why @lorealskin did not back her up? She is part of their brand. They must did a background check before hiring her. And if any of the faces of @lorealskin tweet the same thing will they have to step down too or its just because @amenaofficial is a Muslims that first she needs to apologize for having an opinion and second she needs to step down? I thought she is worth it for the campaign @lorealskin?
n4ssbssafter this apology ,all i can do is to UNFOLLOW .
theburningbrabusIdiot why did you apologize???? You were right what you first tweeted. You’re an idiot!
pearl_arts_boutique@anwarraw at least she covers her hair! You don’t even look Palestinian or like a Muslim, your picture is more in tune non Palestinian Muslim look! Looks like you’re the one selling out her..
treydoggydoggYou’re a fool. Why apologize for telling the truth
treydoggydogg@petrakoster2 fuck off jew

razzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz: You stood up for humanity and justice…then you apologised…like standing up against Hitler and then apologising to him after!

jasmin.luneSad. I think many hide their antisemitism behind their anti-zionism. How many of you hate jews solely because of their religion? In the end, all religions are just old fairytales.
mister_you27: you are not strong enough and your career is more important than your faith and honor ??? really very disappointed in you that you ecxus for the truth. unfollow this page and boycott L’oreal @amenaofficial
razzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzBut nobody knows under which circumstances you done this…so ignore the negativity and keep your head up!

crochetawaythedays@safiatienza: its all for a bit of fame….. People get hooked on the attention.
princess.nasreen4u@__miss_faith__ I want to provide myself and my family too. I’m not gonna sit at home and expect my bowl to be filled by supernatural forces. I go to work. Slave at home and pay my bills. But I’m not gg to sell my morals to feed my family or myself. And by bread, I did mean the basic necessities that a person needs. It’s the extra luxuries that ppl mistake for necessities.

shinrewik: to be honest I don’t see why you should step down for ‘anti-Israel’ tweets if someone is against kim Jung il should they also step down- political awareness and opinions should not be taboo even Israeli people don’t agree with their states treatment of Palestinians should they be banished or shut down as well
[email protected] She just apologised for defending her fellow Muslims. Oppressed ones, might I add. Or are you unaware of that? Do you know how that makes their situation even worse? Seeing Muslims abandon their own for the sake of Zionist scum? Honey, what you NEED TO LEARN is about brotherhood in the religion.
petrakoster2@treydoggydogg stupid Palestine

ismailthegrateful: Why stepping down …??? What wrong have you done .!!!! Like seriously.?.? Why are you apologising for saying the truth sister ..!!!

ismailthegrateful: You should be proud.!!!!!!!

a1yra@dinatokio She supported L’Oréal a company that needs to be boycotted because these companies are directly complicit in the everyday hell that the Palestinian go through. She did not apologise for that. Then when accepting the platform, she did not apologise. When her previous political views were ousted and clearly made to step down had no choice she chooses to apologise then? Wtf is this hypocrisy the only people she should be apologising to are the Palestinian and most importantly should not have associated her self with a company like that in the first place. It’s up to us, our generation to make a difference YouTubers bang on about this shit all the time but yet they’re dim as fuck half the time. Seriously disappointed she did this.

n444im4: Everyone was buzzing when you, a hijabi Muslim was chosen to front a hair campaign lorealpro. If championing diversity is one of your passions then you wouldn’t have to delete the tweets nor apologise. In 2014, the IDF bombed schools, hospitals, homes, destroyed a whole country. They killed innocent boys who were playing football on the beach. That could have been your love bug or anyone’s love bug. If you really believe in diversity, then you will continue being true to your self and support Palestine and it’s people. For one minute I don’t believe this statement has come sincerely from you but from the higher authorities at L’Oreal. Humanity and standing up for wrongdoings and innocent killings is bigger than any affiliation/contract/money with any cosmetic giants.
