A fire outbreak destroyed three radio stations in Aba, Abia State, on Saturday night, burning broadcasting equipment worth millions of naira.
The stations—Enyimba 94.3 FM, Rose 101.9 FM, and Legend 98.3 FM—were located in the same building on Margret Avenue, near the PZ axis of Aba-Owerri road.
The fire reportedly began in the television section of Enyimba TV and spread to the other stations in the building.
Personnel from the Abia State Fire Service managed to stop the fire from reaching nearby buildings. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the stations lost all broadcasting equipment in the blaze.
In a statement on Sunday, the stations’ management confirmed the incident: “We regret to inform you that our three radio stations, Enyimba 94.3 FM, Legend 98.3 FM, and Rose 101.9 FM Aba, were targeted in a devastating fire attack on Saturday, November 2nd, 2024.” The management thanked those who helped to control the fire and expressed relief that all staff were safe.
“To exercise caution, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily shut down operations across all three stations. This will enable us to assess the damage and carry out precautionary measures,” the statement added.
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State visited the site on Sunday to offer support. Enyimba Radio’s Facebook page shared, “The governor assessed the damage and encouraged staff members to stay strong despite the inferno. He assured all present of the state government’s commitment to helping the company recover from this setback.” Governor Otti pledged government support to help the stations resume operations quickly.
During his visit, the governor also urged individuals and businesses to focus on fire safety as the dry season nears, recommending fire extinguishers and safety protocols for homes and workplaces.
