A fire outbreak has destroyed more than 100 thatched houses at the Water Board Internally Displaced Persons camp in Monguno, Borno State.
The incident was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Maiduguri.
Daso said the fire broke out at about 4.30 pm on Friday and was reported to the Monguno Police Station by the camp chairman, Bukar Mbati.
“The inferno engulfed over 100 thatched houses, destroying foodstuffs and various household items,” he said.
He explained that operatives of the state fire service, the police, and other security agencies deployed to the camp were able to put out the fire.
According to him, a patrol team led by the Divisional Police Officer in Monguno also visited the scene to assess the level of damage.
“Thankfully, no lives were lost, and no injuries were recorded. While photographs of the damage have been taken, the total value of the destroyed property is yet to be ascertained,” Daso said.
He added that investigations were ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
The incident comes days after another fire razed 76 temporary shelters belonging to IDPs from Borno State in Ngamma village, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
That fire left many families homeless, with one person injured and taken to hospital, while several households lost livestock, foodstuffs and other essential items.
