A fire broke out at the Ebute Ero Market in Lagos Island early Saturday, destroying several shops and causing significant losses.
The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the incident in a statement. She said the fire started near the police station adjacent to Carter Bridge and was contained swiftly by firefighters from Ebute Elefun, Dolphin, Sari-Iganmu, and Alausa stations.
“Their effective management of the situation minimized further damage,” Adeseye stated.
Although the fire was extinguished, it damaged several lock-up shops in bungalow structures trading in tools and kitchenware. A mop-up exercise is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the number of shops affected and the value of the losses. Investigations to uncover the fire’s cause are also underway. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
This incident comes just a day after a fire destroyed shops at a spare parts market in Idumota, Lagos State, on Friday night. Goods worth millions were lost in that fire as well.
According to Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the fire at Idumota was quickly curtailed by combined efforts from LASEMA teams, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Federal Fire Service.
“No casualties or injuries were recorded at the incident scene,” Oke-Osanyintolu said, adding that law enforcement ensured crowd control for safety during the operation.
