A devastating fire broke out at Ifejika Street, near Sokoto Road in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Friday.
Firefighters from the Anambra State Fire Service rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call around 6:20 am.
Four firefighting trucks were deployed to battle the fire, with assistance from other security agencies and concerned residents.
Some eyewitnesses shared videos online, showing the extent of the damage. The fire reportedly spread to nearby residential buildings and warehouses, worsening the losses.
The Anambra State Fire Service urged the public to remain calm, assuring them that efforts were underway to contain the situation. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
“We appeal to traders and residents to take fire safety measures seriously. Electrical installations should be properly maintained, and fire-prone materials must be stored safely,” the fire service advised.
Business owners in Onitsha have continued to count their losses, calling on the government to provide relief and prevent future incidents.
