A major fire destroyed three shops at the Ladipo Baale Roundabout plank market on Thursday morning in Orile-Iganmu, Lagos.
The blaze, which started around midnight, caused property damage worth millions of naira.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, reported that no deaths or injuries were recorded in the incident.
Oke-Osanyitolu explained that the fire began from a pile of planks, which was sparked by a power surge. The flames quickly spread to three other shops within the market.
He said, “No casualties, nor injuries were recorded in the incident. A significant quantity of planks and properties, worth millions of naira, were salvaged by responders during the operation.”
He also praised the quick response of the emergency teams. “Collaborative efforts of the responders were able to quickly bring the fire under control before it could spread to more shops,” Oke-Osanyitolu added.
In response to the fire, LASEMA’s Response Team, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Nigerian Police Force all took part in managing the emergency. The agencies, along with members of the Plank Market Association, have been conducting public advocacy to promote preventive measures and avoid future incidents.
