A midnight fire has destroyed property worth millions of naira at the staff quarters of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, in Oyo State.

The fire started around 2 am on Wednesday, May 7, and affected three out of four rooms in the quarters. No lives were lost in the incident.

The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident in a statement. He said the fire was caused by an electric spark that happened when the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company restored power.

“The distressed call was received at exactly 2:26 am on Wednesday,” Akinyinka said. “Firefighters, led by ACFS Adesina Olusoji, quickly went to the scene. On getting there, we discovered that the staff quarters were already on fire.”

He explained that the fire service team worked together with the University of Ibadan Fire Department to put out the fire.

“The firemen swiftly swung into action and stopped the fire from spreading to nearby buildings and properties. The fire was later completely extinguished,” he said.

Akinyinka added, “Three out of the four rooms in the staff quarters were badly affected. Though no one was injured or killed, the fire destroyed property worth millions of naira.”

The Oyo State Fire Service urged members of the public to always turn off electrical appliances when not in use and report emergencies early to reduce damage.
