Four electronics shops located in a building at Ikotun, Lagos State, were razed by fire in the early hours of New Year’s Day, with all items in the affected shops completely destroyed.

The shops are housed in a building located beside the GUO Transport Company in the Ikotun area.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, goods lost to the fire included washing machines, television sets and power generators.

A resident who lives close to the building told newsmen that neighbours quickly took action to stop the fire from spreading to other sections of the structure.

He said residents poured large quantities of water on the fire in an attempt to control it before officials of the Lagos State Fire Service arrived.

He expressed appreciation to the firefighters for their swift response, which helped to extinguish the fire and save the rest of the building.

“If not for their timely intervention, the whole building would have burnt and the fire would have affected our own,” he said.

The resident added that although the exact cause of the fire could not be confirmed, a faulty electrical circuit was suspected.

Furthermore, the affected area was cordoned off following the incident.

No casualties were recorded in the fire outbreak.

Recall that the Great Nigeria Insurance building on Lagos Island and the Army Arena Market in Oshodi were also recently destroyed by fire within the past eight days.
