Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has granted freedom to six inmates serving different sentences in correctional centres across the state.
The governor announced the decision on Wednesday as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary.
Fintiri explained that the pardon followed recommendations from the Adamawa State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy after a review of the inmates’ cases.
“Therefore, in the exercise of my prerogative of mercy as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and in line with the recommendations of the Adamawa State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, I have granted pardon to six persons who have served various jail terms and have significantly demonstrated good conduct over the years,” the governor said.
He directed the immediate release of the inmates and instructed correctional authorities to implement the order without delay.
The pardoned inmates are Wamari Godwin, Abraham Marksunil, David Paul, Ibrahim Adamu, Usman Inuwa, and Sani Yahaya.
Fintiri noted that their release was not only to reward good behaviour but also to give them a second chance to contribute positively to society.
Nigeria celebrates its Independence every October 1 with official events, cultural activities, and presidential speeches. This year, however, the federal government cancelled the traditional military parade usually held to mark the occasion.
