Retired A.C Milan, Chelsea and Dynamo Kiev player, Andriy Shevchenko has been appointed as the head coach of the Ukranian national team.Shevchenko, who was part of the Ukranian coaching team to the just concluded Euro 2016 championship, was appointed on Friday, July 15 at the House of Football in Kyiv, reports say.
It was gathered that the Executive Committee of Football Federation of Ukraine unanimously supported Shevchenko’s candidature as a team manager.
According to the contract, the 39-year-old would first have a two-year deal with the possibility of extension for the same period.
Shevchenko, who retired in 2012, has never before worked as a manager.
Ukraine’s record scorer with 48 goals captained his country to their first World Cup finals in 2006.
Ukraine’s World Cup 2018 qualification campaign begins with a home match against Iceland in September. They are both in Group I along with Croatia, Turkey, Finland and Kosovo.
Meanwhile, Italians Mauro Tassotti and Andrea Maldera as well as Spaniard Raul Riancho will serve as assistant coaches to Shevchenko.
