The Nigerian Government has vowed to take action against the ill-treatment of some Nigerian travellers at a Republic of Togo airport over the weekend.

As seen in a viral video, some Nigerian travellers were assaulted, manhandled and handcuffed for protesting the denial of connecting flight at the Gnassimgbe Eyadema International airport in Lome, Togo.

The Lagos-bound Nigerians were flown via an Ethiopian Airlines flight from the United States of America but on getting to Lome, Togo on Saturday, they were told that the trip could not continue as their connecting flight, Asky Airline was full.

Their protest was met with stiff resistance from the security personnel and airline staff who went further to confiscate their personal telephones

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esther Sunsuwa, said, “We will take action against this ill-treatment; it can’t just go like that. The Embassy there has already reported to appropriate authorities so let wait and see the outcome.”

Following the intervention of Onyeama who contacted Nigeria’s Ambassador to Togo, Mr Debo Adesina, a chartered flight was arranged to airlift some of the stranded travellers to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

“The Ambassador Debo Adesina immediately rushed to the airport when I called him and oversaw the evacuation of everyone back to Nigeria. Thank you very much for alerting me. God bless,” Onyeama said.
