FG to shut part of Third Mainland Bridge January 9

The Federal Ministry of Works has revealed plans for urgent repairs on the Iyana-Oworonsoki section of the Third Mainland Bridge to address essential maintenance requirements.

The closure is scheduled to begin on January 9, 2024, marking a crucial step in the government’s commitment to ensuring the structural integrity of the bridge.

The announcement came from the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Olukorede Keisha, who emphasized the need to close the Iyana Oworonshoki-Adeniji Adele bound section for comprehensive repairs.
Keisha stated, “The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Works, wishes to inform the motoring public that the emergency repairs of Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos will continue with the closure of Iyana Oworonshoki-Adeniji Adele bound for the effective repairs of the entire section of the bridge.”

To facilitate the smooth flow of traffic during the repair period, motorists are advised to consider alternative routes.
Keisha outlined three alternative routes for commuters to choose from:

1. Ojota – Ikorodu road- Funsho Williams Avenue – Eko Bridge-Apogbon-CMS
2. Ojota- Ikorodu road- Jibowu – Yaba- Oyingbo-Iddo- Carter Bridge- CMS
3. Gbagada- Anthony- Ikorodu Road- Funsho Williams – Eko Bridge- Apogbon – CMS.

Keisha urged cooperation from motorists and emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic management officials’ guidance.

She expressed gratitude for past cooperation and stressed the significance of continued collaboration during this critical repair period.

In October 2023, Keisha had previously disclosed plans for a comprehensive overhaul of the Third Mainland Bridge’s asphalt layers. Describing the bridge as a vital lifeline for commuters in Lagos, she highlighted the necessity for a complete overhaul of the asphalt overlay, addressing maintenance issues that had accumulated over the past 30 years.

“The Federal government has awarded that contract already, and preparatory works are pending when the contractor moves to the site because there are some elements of repairs that need to be imported,” Keisha added.
