The Federal Government has vowed to investigate the alleged hoarding of relief materials meant for Internally Displaced Persons at the Durumi IDP camp in Abuja.
The Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, Aliyu Ahmed, uncovered the hoarded supplies on Sunday during a visit to the camp.
Ahmed, who was at the camp to inaugurate a computer center donated by the Brand Life Vision Foundation, inspected the area and found that food and non-food items meant for IDPs were stored in classrooms instead of being distributed.
“On our arrival, we saw things that should not be happening here. Some classrooms were used to store both food and non-food items that should have been given to the IDPs. We will not accept this, and we will take serious action,” he said.
He also announced plans to investigate other IDP camps across the country.
“What we saw here is alarming. We will extend our investigation to other camps because if it’s happening here, it might be happening elsewhere,” he added.
The commission reassured IDPs that the government remains committed to their welfare and will continue to support their education. It also pledged to work with the Universal Basic Education Commission to provide teachers for displaced children.
Meanwhile, the founder of Brightlife Vision Foundation, Hajia Binta Sidi, revealed plans to train 1,000 IDPs across the country.
“Our foundation helps destitute children, underprivileged persons, IDPs, and orphans. We will provide teachers to train the beneficiaries,” she said.
She also commended the commission for providing solar power for the new ICT training center.
