Nigeria’s technology watchdog, NITDA, in partnership with the Nigerian Communications Commission and the National Broadcasting Commission, has deactivated over 13.5 million social media accounts for violating online safety rules. Nearly 59 million pieces of offensive content were also taken down.

NITDA’s spokesperson, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, disclosed this in the 2024 Code of Practice Compliance Report submitted by Google, Microsoft, TikTok, and other platforms. She said the move aligns with Nigeria’s Code of Practice for online platforms, aimed at reducing harmful content and creating a safer digital space.

“The compliance reports provide valuable insights into the platforms’ efforts to address user safety concerns in line with the Code of Practice and the platforms’ community guidelines,” Umar said.

According to the report, 754,629 complaints were filed by users during the period. About 420,439 pieces of content were restored after users appealed their removal.

Umar commended the platforms for complying with the rules and stressed that building a safe digital space requires ongoing collaboration among regulators, tech companies, and civil society.
