The Federal Government has released ₦32.9 billion under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund to improve primary health centres across the country.

Dr Oritseweyimi Ogbe, Secretary of the Ministerial Oversight Committee, disclosed this during the committee’s 12th meeting in Abuja.

He said this was the third disbursement for 2025 and was part of the BHCPF 2.0 reform aimed at promoting accountability and better service delivery at the community level.

Ogbe explained that the National Health Insurance Authority is verifying enrollee data, while the National Primary Health Care Development Agency is expanding direct funding to health facilities.

He noted that between the first and second quarters of 2025, outpatient attendance in BHCPF-supported centres rose by 28 per cent, while skilled birth deliveries increased by 18 per cent.

According to him, the Coordinating Minister of Health recently signed off the BHCPF 2.0 guideline to ensure accountability and sustainability.

He added that the new framework includes monitoring by civil society groups and a biannual BHCPF Accountability Index to measure performance and transparency.

Ogbe also said the Ministry of Health is partnering with the ICPC through a Joint Task Team to track fund use and prevent misuse.

He assured that with proper oversight and partner support, BHCPF 2.0 would strengthen Nigeria’s health system and bring the country closer to achieving universal health coverage.
