The Federal Government has approved an increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps members to ₦77,000. This raise will take effect starting from July 2024.

The NYSC spokesperson, Caroline Embu, made this announcement on Wednesday, stating that the increase is in line with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.

According to a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, signed by its Chairman, Ekpo Nta, the new allowance reflects the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of Corps members.

“Prior to this, the Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, had visited the Chairman to advocate for a better welfare package for Corps members,” Embu explained. She added that the NYSC boss is grateful for the government’s support, believing that the increase will provide much-needed relief and boost the morale of Corps members as they continue serving the nation.

Before this adjustment, the monthly allowance for Corps members was ₦33,000. This had previously been raised in 2020 from ₦19,800 following the approval of a new minimum wage of ₦30,000.

In July 2024, President Bola Tinubu signed a new minimum wage bill into law, increasing the National Minimum Wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000 after months of discussions between government officials, labor unions, and private sector representatives. This new law paved the way for the current increase in Corps members’ allowances.
