The Federal Government has directed the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority to investigate the tragic petrol tanker explosion in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The explosion, which occurred on Tuesday night, claimed the lives of over 100 people and left many others injured.

The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, issued this directive in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Nneamaka Okafor, on Wednesday. Lokpobiri expressed deep regret over the incident and extended condolences to the families affected.

The tanker, which was transporting fuel from Kano to Nguru Town in Yobe State, lost control and exploded near Khadija University around 11:30 p.m. According to the police, some people tried to scoop the spilled fuel, leading to many deaths.

“The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic petrol tanker explosion in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area, Jigawa State, which resulted in the loss of over 100 lives and left dozens more injured,” the statement said.

The Minister also urged Nigerians to stay away from vehicles transporting petroleum products that have been involved in accidents. He emphasized the risks of scooping fuel and called on petroleum transporters to use certified drivers who follow safety standards.

“While we understand the temptation to scavenge, the dangers of attempting to collect spilt fuel cannot be overstated. The tragic loss of lives in this incident serves as a stark reminder of the severe risks involved,” the Minister warned.

Lokpobiri reassured Nigerians that the government is committed to enforcing safety measures in the transport of petroleum products to prevent future accidents.
