The Federal Government has opened a new smart police station in the Katampe area of Abuja to improve security and strengthen community policing.
The high-tech station, built by the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, was officially handed over to the Nigeria Police Force on Wednesday. The aim is to boost police work and help officers respond better to the needs of residents in the Federal Capital Territory.
The Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, was represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Anuma Nla, at the event. He said the new station is a sign of the government’s commitment to law and order at the grassroots level.
“It shows our resolve to improve community-police relations and ensure every citizen lives without fear,” Nla said.
“This station is a beacon of hope, a pledge of protection, and a commitment to better service,” he added.
He urged the officers posted to the station to carry out their duties with professionalism, honesty, and respect for human rights. He also called for fairness and accountability in handling complaints and protecting citizens.
Dr Nla said the smart station fits into President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and reflects the government’s ongoing plans to support and equip the police.
“We want a safer and more secure Nigeria, and this station is part of that plan,” he said.
The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, described the smart station as a “mission statement for nation-building.”
“This is not just another police station,” Sheidu said.
“It is built to meet modern law enforcement standards. It is safe, efficient, and designed to serve the people.”
He said the building includes CCTV cameras, a strong fence, clean water supply, and a solar power system supported by the Rural Electrification Agency. He also announced that a new six-man police quarters would soon be completed to improve the living conditions of officers.
“No officer should struggle with poor housing while working hard to protect others,” Sheidu said.
He urged the police to take good care of the new facility and serve with pride and discipline.
Smart police stations like this one are also planned for Kogi, Enugu, and other parts of the country in the coming days.
