The Federal Government has awarded a contract for the reconstruction and dredging of the Escravos Channel at Warri Port in Delta State. This is part of efforts to revive Nigeria’s Eastern ports.
According to Vanguard, the Nigerian Ports Authority confirmed that the project forms part of a wider rehabilitation programme aimed at improving navigation. Additionally, it seeks to restore confidence among vessels using the Warri port corridor.
NPA targets safer navigation
NPA General Manager of Corporate and Strategic Communication, Ikechukwu Oyenmakara, said the channel reconstruction is one of six projects. These are included in the Eastern Ports modernisation programme.
He said China Harbour Engineering was recently awarded the projects. In addition, authorities move to address longstanding infrastructure challenges affecting the ports.
The Escravos Channel has faced problems linked to its shallow draught. Consequently, this has made some vessels reluctant to use the route.
There have also been repeated incidents of ships running aground. This creates difficulties for vessel operators and local pilots navigating the channel.
Warri Port revival gathers momentum
The dredging is expected to improve the depth of the waterway. As a result, it will make it easier for larger vessels to access Warri Port.
Port users have repeatedly raised concerns. They point out that deteriorating infrastructure has limited the competitiveness of facilities in the eastern part of the country.
The latest intervention forms part of a broader federal effort to modernise port infrastructure and reduce pressure on Lagos ports.
If completed as planned, authorities expect the project to improve vessel movement. Moreover, it should strengthen maritime trade and make Warri Port more attractive to shipping operators.
