The Federal Government will meet with the Academic Staff Union of Universities on Monday to discuss the union’s recent strike notice.
ASUU, led by National President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, issued a 21-day strike notice on Wednesday.
The notice demands action from President Bola Tinubu’s administration to address ongoing issues affecting Nigerian universities.
Prof. Osodeke announced the strike notice at a press briefing held at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Abia State.
He stated, “This is not an ultimatum but a formal strike notice. We are providing a 21-day notice before we proceed with the strike.”
In response, Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman said on a TVC program Thursday that government officials would meet with ASUU leaders on Monday to discuss their demands. “We will meet with ASUU leaders to address their grievances and work towards a resolution,” Mamman said.
ASUU’s notice was sent to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and the Ministry of Education.
The union is pushing for the implementation of agreements made in 2009 and payment of overdue academic allowances. They also seek full release of revitalisation funds, which have been partially disbursed since 2013.
A source from ASUU confirmed that the notice followed a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the University of Ibadan. “We are providing a 21-day notice as required by law before any strike action,” the source said.
ASUU had previously embarked on an eight-month strike under the last administration, disrupting the academic calendar.
