The Federal Capital Territory administration has announced free health insurance and caesarean section for all pregnant women living in the area.
The announcement was made on Monday by the Mandate Secretary for Health, Dr. Adedolapo Fasewa, during the 2025 World Health Day celebration held at Gwarinpa District Hospital in Abuja.
Dr. Fasewa explained that to enjoy this benefit, pregnant women must first register with the FCT Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS). She also added that the scheme includes free infant care after childbirth.
She said ,“Nigeria has one of the highest rates of maternal deaths in sub-Saharan Africa. The FCT administration is not happy about this and is working hard to change the story.”
Dr. Fasewa encouraged all women in the FCT to register for the free scheme. She stressed that the fight to reduce maternal deaths should not be left to the Federal Government alone but must involve everyone.
“This is a call to action. We want more women to survive childbirth, and we want their babies to live too,” she added.
The FCT Health Insurance Scheme aims to make healthcare more accessible and reduce the financial burden on families, especially those from low-income backgrounds.
