The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission will arraign the Managing Director and CEO of MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, Karl Toriola, on May 28, 2025, over alleged violations.

Toriola, along with MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, the company’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Tobechukwu Okigbo, and General Manager of Regulatory Affairs, Ikenna Ikeme, will face charges for failing to provide documents and information requested by the commission.

According to the FCCPC, their actions go against the FCCPC Act.

The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/354/2024, will be heard by Justice H.J. Yilwa of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

When the case was mentioned, the defendants were not present in court.

Justice Yilwa asked FCCPC’s lawyer, Chizenum Nsitem, about their absence. Nsitem explained that he was newly assigned to the case and needed time to review the files.

Following this, the judge adjourned the case to May 28 for arraignment.

In a related case, the Nigerian Copyright Commission had earlier filed charges against MTN Nigeria Communications Ltd, Karl Toriola, and others over alleged copyright infringement.

The NCC accused MTN and Fun Mobile Ltd, along with their CEO, Yahaya Maibe, of using the musical works of artiste Maleke Moye without permission between 2010 and 2017.

The works, including “911,” “Minimini-Wana Wana,” and “Stop Racism,” were allegedly sold as caller ringback tunes without the artiste’s consent.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, who is handling the copyright case, had adjourned the matter to May 15 after the Attorney-General of the Federation showed interest in taking over the case.
