Law enforcement authorities have identified the man who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said the shooter was 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. A motive for the attack is still unclear.

The gunman was immediately “neutralized” by the Secret Service, according to their chief of communications, Anthony Guglielmi.

Bethel Park is a mostly white and relatively affluent city in the southern area of greater Pittsburgh. Butler, where the rally took place, is about an hour’s drive north of Pittsburgh.

Pennsylvania voter records show a Thomas Matthew Crooks with the same address and birth date listed as a registered Republican, but it’s not clear when that record was created.

At a news conference on Saturday night, state police Lt. Col. George Bivens said, “The shooter has been tentatively identified. It’s a matter of doing biometric confirmations.”

Investigators are also working to find a motive and determine if the shooter had any accomplices.

The FBI is conducting a search of Crooks’ home, including deploying a bomb squad as a precautionary measure.
