Renowned Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani has passed away at the age of 91, his company confirmed on Thursday.

According to a statement from the Armani Group, the legendary designer died “surrounded by his loved ones.”

“With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani,” the statement read.

Armani, widely regarded as one of the most influential fashion designers of the modern era, launched his fashion house in Milan in 1975. His sleek and refined aesthetic quickly elevated him to international fame, where he became known not only for dressing Hollywood stars but also for reshaping global fashion standards.

The company announced that Armani’s funeral will be private. However, a public viewing will be held in Milan on Saturday and Sunday, allowing fans and admirers the opportunity to pay their respects.

“Il Signor Armani, as he was always respectfully and admiringly called by employees and collaborators, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones,” the Armani Group said. “Indefatigable to the end, he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections, and the many ongoing and future projects.”

Earlier this year, Armani had cancelled his scheduled menswear show in Milan due to health concerns. He also missed the Paris presentation of his Armani Privé collection, following medical advice to rest.

“In 20 years of Armani Prive, it’s the first time I’m not in Paris,” he had said in a statement issued to AFP in July.
“My doctors advised more rest, even though I felt ready.”
He added that he had “followed and overseen every aspect of the show remotely,” and emphasized: “I approved and signed off on everything you will see.”

Credited with pioneering red-carpet fashion, Armani’s impact extended beyond haute couture. He developed the more accessible Emporio Armani line and expanded his brand into luxury hotels and lifestyle ventures. His death comes just weeks before planned celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of his eponymous label.

Italy’s Culture Minister, Alessandro Giuli, led national tributes, describing Armani as “a leading figure in Italian culture, who was able to transform elegance into a universal language.”

“His understated and innovative style redefined the relationship between fashion, cinema, and society, leaving an indelible mark on contemporary culture,” Giuli said. “He was not only a master of fashion, but also a recognised ambassador of Italian identity around the world.”
