Moviegoers across the United States are turning screenings of the new Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” into impromptu dance parties, with fans jumping out of their seats to moonwalk and bust moves to the King of Pop’s greatest hits.

The film, which follows Jackson’s rise to superstardom from his Jackson 5 days through his 1988 “Bad” tour, has sparked a viral trend of energetic audience participation. Videos posted online show dancers lighting up theaters during opening weekend.

The biopic ends before the child sex abuse allegations that surfaced against Jackson in 1993. The film has received rave reviews from fans, scoring 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter, though critics gave it a much lower 38 percent.

However, the dancing has caused mixed feelings online. While some celebrate the energy and tribute to Jackson’s music, others are disturbed and would rather watch the film in peace without disruptions.

Despite the controversy, “Michael” is expected to take the number one spot at the box office this weekend.
