Fan protests disrupts Bayern Munich’s match with Bochum

Published

Bayern Munich suffered a 3-2 defeat that was punctuated by fan protests against proposed private equity investment, underscoring growing tensions within German football in a tumultuous encounter against Bochum.

The game was briefly suspended as Bochum supporters hurled tennis balls onto the field, prompting referee Daniel Schlager to halt play.

Subsequently, Bayern Munich fans joined the demonstration, lobbing additional tennis balls onto the pitch and voicing discontent against the German soccer league.

After a delay of approximately 13 minutes, the match resumed amidst the ongoing backdrop of protests against the proposed sale of a future league stake to a private equity investor.

Notably, similar demonstrations in previous matches have seen apples, chocolate coins, and even remote control cars thrown onto the field in protest.

The disruption adds to the mounting pressure on Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel, as the club’s pursuit of a 12th consecutive league title faces increasing uncertainty.

With Bayern now trailing Bayer Leverkusen by eight points, Xabi Alonso’s formidable side remains undefeated in the league.

Although Bayern initially took the lead through Jamal Musiala’s 14th-minute strike, Bochum rallied back with goals from Takuma Asano and Kevin Schlotterbeck to secure a 2-1 advantage before halftime.

A late penalty from Kevin Stöger extended Bochum’s lead to 3-1, rendering Harry Kane’s 94th-minute consolation goal inconsequential in the final scoreline.
