The wife of the late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, Omowunmi Aloba, has agreed to a Deoxyribonucleic Acid test to establish the paternity of their son, Liam.
The decision follows ongoing tensions with the singer’s father, Joseph Aloba, who has been pushing for the DNA test since Mohbad’s death at the age of 27, which sparked controversy and debate on social media.
The legal team representing Joseph Aloba previously filed an application seeking a court order to serve Omowunmi by posting documents at her last known address.
According to the family’s legal representative, Emmanuel Oroko, prior attempts to serve her had failed.
On July 9, 2024, the Magistrates Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, directed both parties to pursue alternative dispute resolution measures. Despite closed-door negotiations, no agreement was initially reached.
However, a breakthrough came when a representative of the family’s legal team, Monisola Odumosu, confirmed that Omowunmi had agreed to proceed with the DNA test.
“Wunmi has agreed to carry out the DNA,” Odumosu stated noting that the decision followed settlement terms outlined by both parties.
The agreement specifies that the DNA test will be conducted at a recognized and accredited medical facility, either within Lagos State or at another mutually acceptable location outside the state.
Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, has committed to covering the costs associated with the DNA test and any additional fees involved.
The statement read, “Emmanuel Oroko informed the court that both parties had settled outside the court and are ready to move the settlement terms already filed and served on Wunmi Aloba’s lawyers. In response, Kabir Akingbolu, Esq. (leading Adams Atata Esq. and M.K.O Orire Esq.) concurred, and the court adopted the terms of settlement as the judgment of the court.
“In the terms filed before the court, the respondent, Wunmi Aloba, consented to submit herself and her son, (Master Liam Aloba), for the conduct of a Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) at Two (2) recognised and accredited government or private medical facilities within Lagos State or another agreeable hospital outside Lagos State. In turn, the applicant, Mr. Joseph Aloba, agreed to bear the cost of the DNA test processes, including the fees for the testing facility, the collection of samples, and any associated legal or administrative fees.
“The court further ordered that the Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) test be conducted at a mutually agreed-upon laboratory or medical centre within Nigeria. To ensure and ascertain the reliability of the test, the court further appointed some officers to supervise the process of the DNA test.”
