Family confirms death of ex-NEC chairman, Humphrey Nwosu

The family of former Chairman of Nigeria’s National Electoral Commission, Professor Humphrey Nwosu, has announced his death.

He passed away on October 20, 2024, after a brief illness, as confirmed by his son, Engr. Nnaemeka Humphrey Nwosu, in a statement on Friday.

Prof. Nwosu was 83 years old and was known for his strong advocacy for democracy in Nigeria. The family statement expressed their sorrow, saying, “With a profound sense of sadness and deep grief, the family of distinguished Professor Humphrey Nwosu announces his death.” They praised him for his significant role in laying the democratic foundation of the country.

During his time as Chairman of NEC from 1989 to 1993, Prof. Nwosu oversaw the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election, which is considered Nigeria’s fairest and most credible election. His efforts during this period have made him a hero to many Nigerians.

Prof. Nwosu was also a respected scholar, earning degrees in Political Science from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated with First Class Honors and Magna Cum Laude. His writings, including his book “Laying the Foundation for Nigeria’s Democracy: My Account of June 12, 1993 Presidential Election and its Annulment,” have contributed to Nigeria’s political understanding.

The family statement remembered him not just as a scholar but also as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and community leader. Known as “óka ome” in his hometown of Ajalli, Anambra State, he was celebrated for his philanthropy and efforts to improve his community.

Prof. Nwosu is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mrs. Stella Nwosu, their four children, and six grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced soon.
