The family of Mrs. Funmilola Popoola has accused doctors and nurses at a hospital in Ibadan, Oyo State, of administering expired drugs, which they believe caused her death.

The claims were made during a live radio program called ‘Kokoro Alate’ on Agidigbo 88.7 FM according to Daily Post.

The family spokesman, David Popoola stated that his mother was admitted to a hospital in Ibadan on May 30, 2024, and alleged that the hospital used expired medications on her, which he believes contributed to her death on June 5, 2024.

Popoola said, “On the 30th of May 2024, my mother was sick and I took her to a nearby private hospital. They said she needed oxygen, but since they didn’t have any, they referred us to another hospital.”

He continued, “At the Specialists Hospital in Idi Ape, they examined her in the car and told us to move to their Bodija branch. We were taken there by their ambulance and asked to pay N100,000 for admission, plus other charges for drugs and an endocrinologist because she was diagnosed with diabetes.”

Popoola reported that treatment began, and his sister later discovered that some of the drugs, including a tablet and an injection, were expired. He said, “I was at church when my sister sent me a picture of the tablet they gave her, which had expired in January 2024. She also found out that another injection had expired in April 2024.”

Angered by the discovery, Popoola and his brother returned to the hospital. “I checked the drugs myself and confronted the doctor. She said she had an emergency, and another doctor came to speak with me. I told her the injections and tablets were expired. By the next morning, my mother was unconscious and later died.”

Popoola concluded, “The hospital is responsible for my mother’s death.”

In response to the allegations, the Oyo State government has launched an investigation. Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, the Commissioner for Health, said, “The Ministry of Health is aware of the incident and has begun an investigation. We will keep the public updated as we continue to look into this matter.”

The commissioner also expressed sympathy to the family, stating, “On behalf of the Oyo State Government, I wish to commiserate with the family of the deceased.”
