FA Cup: Nottingham Forest eliminate sloppy Arsenal in third round upset

Published

Championship side, Nottingham Forest caused a major upset by eliminating Premier League side, Arsenal from the FA Cup on Sunday.

Lewis Grabban came off the bench to score the only goal for Steve Cooper’s side after Mikel Arteta’s side put up a shambolic display at the City Ground.

The Gunners dawned a one-off all-white to support Adidas’ campaign against knife crime and youth violence in London.

Arteta’s side would have been awarded a penalty but for the absence of VAR to spot Joe Worrall while pulling the shirt of Ben White.

Arsenal who suffered a 2-1 loss in the Premier League on New Year’s day to Manchester City failed to secure a single shot on target.

Although both teams had a poor performance in the first half, Forest were more determined in the second half and ended the game with four shots on target.

Arsenal’s only highlight was the theatric exit of Nuno Tavares who was substituted after just 30 minutes following a disappointing performance.

The Portuguese left-back tossed his gloves to the floor in frustration as he walked towards the bench.

Forest’s James Garner forced Bernd Leno to a flying save through a freekick as the hosts exerted their dominance against the timid Gunners.

However, it was 68th-minute substitute, Grabban, that broke the deadlock seven minutes from time by slotting home a cross from Ryan Yates.

Grabban has scored his first FA Cup goal since December 2011 for Rotherham against Shrewsbury, just over 10 years ago.

Arsenal have now been eliminated in the third round of the FA Cup for only the second time across the last 26 seasons, with the other instance also coming away to Nottingham Forest (2017-18) – OptaJoe.

Nottingham Forest will face another Premier League side, Leicester City, in the fourth round.
