Iheanacho Ndidi Rodgers Leicester FA Cup final Chelsea

Leicester City manager, Brendan Rodger, has charged his squad which boasts of Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi to create an incredible legacy when they face Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

Rodger’s men would be looking to win their first trophy since they stunned England to win the Premier League trophy in 2016 under former boss, Claudio Raineri, when they face Thomas Tuchel’s Champions League finalists Chelsea in their first FA Cup final since 1969.

Speaking ahead of the final on Thursday, the former Liverpool boss said: “We have earned the right to be in the final and we will arrive with an opportunity to make our own history.

“We have watched it (the cup final) all through our lives. To be able to lead Leicester out for the first time in 50-odd years will be a real privilege for me. These weeks you always have to stay calm. This is a game where you can create an incredible legacy, you write your own stories in these games.”

Rodger would be banking on the form and experience of Iheanacho, Jamie Vardy, Wilfred Ndidi as well as former Manchester United defender, Johnny Evans, who is facing a fitness test.

He is hoping experienced central defender, Jonny Evans, will be fit to face Chelsea after missing two games with a heel injury.

“We’re giving him another day,” said Rodgers. “He has progressed really well in the last 24 hours. He looked very good and we’ll see what the reaction is after that and make the final decision tomorrow (Friday). It’s just a discussion between myself and Jonny. You always have to speak to the players and Jonny is a warrior. If there is any way he can play — even if he is not 100 percent — he will be out there.”

Head to Head

Leicester came out on top in the previous Premier League meeting between the two, winning 2-0 at King Power Stadium in January. Wilfred Ndidi and James Maddison grabbed the goals on either side of half-time to defeat Frank Lampard’s side on Filbert Way.

Last June’s 1-0 Emirates FA Cup Quarter-Final defeat by Chelsea at King Power Stadium, meanwhile, was Leicester City’s first reverse in four games against the capital club.

A 1-0 triumph, courtesy of Jamie Vardy’s second-half strike in December 2018, was followed by three consecutive draws for the Foxes; 0-0 in May 2019, 1-1 in August 2019 and 2-2 in February 2020.

Chelsea have the upper hand in the all-time head-to-head record, however, tasting victory on 57 occasions, compared to Leicester’s 27 wins, while 34 encounters between the two sides have ended in stalemate.

The Foxes currently sit third on the EPL standings and are on course for a Champions League qualification. They would face Chelsea again at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening for a top-four decider before wrapping up their season with a crucial tie against Tottenham on Sunday.
