An explosion rocked the Rivers State All Progressives Congress secretariat in Port Harcourt early on Saturday, causing significant damage to the property.

Suspected arsonists reportedly used dynamite to target the building’s main gate, security post, and parts of an adjacent structure.

Video footage of the incident has surfaced on social media.

The APC caretaker committee chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, accused supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara of orchestrating the attack.

“At the wee hours of Saturday, pro-Fubara civilian soldiers detonated dynamites at our office,” he said, adding that a second attempt to ignite a fire was quickly extinguished by security personnel.

The explosion occurred amid controversy surrounding the local government elections scheduled for the same day.

Both the APC and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party had announced their decision to boycott the polls, with the reasons for their withdrawal remaining unclear.

The attack has raised concerns about escalating political tensions and violence surrounding the elections.

Authorities have yet to comment on the incident or identify those responsible for the attack.
