An explosion shook the Secretariat of the Action People’s Party in Port Harcourt early Monday morning.
The blast occurred at the party’s office located on Tombia Road in the GRA area.
The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the incident, stating that a substance believed to be dynamite was used. The explosion happened around 1 a.m., causing extensive damage to doors, windows, and other property.
The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the explosion to our correspondent. She said, “Yes, the command can confirm the incident. It happened early this morning. We have dispatched our bomb disposal unit to the party office to ascertain what really happened, and an investigation has commenced.”
The police are assessing the damage and identifying the source of the explosive. Iringe-Koko added, “We have dispatched our bomb disposal unit to the scene to assess the situation, determine the extent of the damage, and identify the source of the explosive substance.”
Chimene, a member of the APP, commented, “I was informed of the attack around 3 a.m. today. This is clearly politically motivated. The APP is growing fast in the state, and we call on the police to investigate and arrest those responsible.”
This incident comes amid speculation that Governor Siminialayi Fubara is considering moving to the APP with his supporters. This follows claims that his predecessor, Chief Nyesom Wike, who is now the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, has taken control of the People’s Democratic Party in the state.
The State Chairman of the APP, Sunny Wokekoro, also confirmed the explosion. He said, “I just arrived here now. I’m assessing the damage after which I will address a press conference.”
The police have started an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion, find those responsible, and ensure they are brought to justice.
