Dr Emmanuel Okafor, former Director, Public Health in Anambra Ministry of Health, has urged
the public to take enough water due to its benefits to the body.
He made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Tuesday.
He said people needed to drink enough water to replenish lost fluid from sweat and their system to avoid dehydration.
Okafor, who explained that the function of the kidneys was to filter out waste through urination, noted that the organ required
adequate water work efficiently and also prevent kidney stones.
He said that drinking water helped to maintain the balance of the body fluids as the body was composed of about 60 per cent water, adding that
the functions of these bodily fluids include digestion, absorption and circulation.
The former director said that the creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients and maintenance of body temperature was among the benefits of water.
“Water helps to clean out toxins in the system, hydrate our bodies, keeps skin plump and joints lubricated,” he said.
He noted that enough water intake could also aid good physical performance, help to prevent and treat headache, prevent hangover, among others.
The expert, who described water as one of the essential needs of man since no human being could exist without water, added that regular water intake helped to maintain body temperature.
He defined good water as sparkling, colourless, odourless and tasteless, adding that the human body was composed of 60 per cent water, which powered body metabolism and catabolism, among others.
People who do not take water as required by the body system could be at risk of sleepless nights, high temperature and constipation, among others.
The medical practitioner, therefore, advised the public to take water as often as possible “because it does not have an overdose, rather, it keeps the body healthy always.”
