A former student of Yaba College of Technology (YabaTech) has raised concerns after being denied access to the institution’s Epe campus for more than a week, reportedly due to his Afro hairstyle.
In a video that went viral on Tuesday, the young man expressed his frustration after security personnel stopped him from entering the campus, citing his natural hair as a violation of school regulations.
“How will you tell me not to come into the campus with my hairstyle? See students coming into the school with rough hair. See students coming in with rough hair, and you are telling me I can’t come in because of my inappropriate hair,” he said.
He described the restriction as unjust, especially as he had urgent business inside the campus involving over N2 million.
“You have trained me to know my rights. You’re telling me I need a hairstyle permit to enter the campus. Why am I not allowed to enter when I have a tangible reason to? I have been stopped for over a week now,” he added.
The video also caught a security officer issuing a threat, saying: “Are we the one that stopped you from entering? The management said we should not allow you to enter the campus. Just go. If you don’t, you will be dealt with. I will wound you now.”
The former student highlighted that other students with bushy hair and dreadlocks were allowed entry, questioning why he was specifically targeted. He described the treatment as embarrassing and discriminatory.
When reached for comment, YabaTech’s Public Relations Officer, Adams Adekunle, said he was unaware of the situation but assured that the matter would be investigated. The institution had not released an official statement as of press time.
